It is run in many libraries across Scotland, and is a fun, exciting way to give your child a love of reading for life.

On their first visit to the participating library children are issued with the Bookbug's Library Challenge collector card. Every time they visit the library the collector card will be stamped, and your child can exchange four stamps for one of our beautifully illustrated Library Challenge certificates.

Your child's name will be written on the certificate to encourage them to feel proud that they have become members of their local library.

There are five different limited edition certificates to collect. So start collecting now - it's never too early or too late to join

We know that in recent years, a number of library authorities have been successfully running Book Crawl activities during the summer, often for the younger siblings of Summer Reading Challenge participants. This is a useful compromise where younger children want to be involved in the challenge but would find the core reading challenge materials too complex, and it is expensive for library authorities to purchase enough reading challenge materials for this younger age group who aren't able to reap all the benefits. In response to this, we have worked with Booktrust's Bookstart team to create a customised Bookstart Book Crawl certificate for the last few years. Click here for this year's certificate.

Your local Bookstart Coordinator will be able to give you details of Bookstart Book Crawl materials still available in your authority to support the 2011 Summer Reading Challenge for younger participants. However, as Bookstart Book Crawl will be coming to an end later this year and being replaced by the exciting new Bookstart Bear Club (ask your Bookstart Coordinator for more details) Bookstart will be unable to supply further Bookstart Book Crawl materials to Local Authorities after this years Challenge. We trust that you will still find the certificate a useful addition to the 2011 Summer Reading Challenge, making it accessible and fun for even the youngest members of your families.

We're grateful to Essex Libraries for these ideas to use when talking to children about their Summer Reading Challenge books:

Book discussion suggestion cards
A series of cards to help children explore their thoughts about the book. On each card is a suggestion for something to talk about - it could be the cover, or a funny bit or a disgusting bit, their favourite character or the most interesting fact. They can be displayed on boards or a table for children to choose as they are waiting to talk to staff. Children can decide which card to select and therefore what they want to talk about before they get to member of staff.
Colour version Bkdiscussioncardscol.pdf

Black/white version Bkdiscussioncardsblk.pdf

(download, print onto card and cut in half or even around the shape).

The cards give children confidence because they can take control of the discussion and they aren't put on the spot. It also helps them to focus on one aspect of the book rather than simply retelling the whole story

Face pictures to share feelings
For children who feel uncomfortable speaking to someone unfamiliar these are a really useful way of helping them to express themselves. You will be able to download a series of images of faces - happy, sad, scared etc print them on card -you may want to laminate them as you will be able to use them year after year. If a child is unwilling to talk -give them the cards to look through and ask them which face was most like theirs when they were reading or had finished the book. Children really like doing this and for some it seems to give them the confidence to talk and they may then say why they chose the face they did. Some may even pull the face.

To be uploaded soon.
